A Meander Through the Art & Manuscripts of the All Souls World

This session will give a history of art as told through the All Souls Trilogy. Drawing on objects big and small, from manuscripts to buildings, it will outline their histories, both in the ‘real’ world and the All Souls world. I will cover aspects of making and using, illustrating the processes through historic texts and the objects themselves. The talk will start at the beginning with Philippe’s Greek heritage, referencing Matthew’s architectural accomplishments, glancing at the historical representation of witches, and exploring the folios of various manuscripts—before looking at Hilliard’s miniatures and considering Sophie’s face jugs. It will broaden the audience’s understanding of the cultural moments that made the objects we see in the All Souls world. It will also discuss how those objects are brought to life (literally and figuratively) in the pages of the novels.
