In the All Souls trilogy, one of the most prominent literary tropes employed by Harkness is that of the Found Family (Chosen Family). As Diana’s character arch progresses, the series of choices she makes not only transition her from an isolated scholar (independent) into the leader of a movement (leader/matriarch). This panel will discuss and through close textual analysis, prove that the woman Diana chooses to be in the first pages of A Discovery of Witches differs radically from the woman she becomes in The Book of Life. This transition would not be complete without acknowledging the definitive shift in who she chooses to call family.
